As part of the Oxford-Paris Alexander project (OPAL) led by Andrew Meadows (New College, Oxford) and Frédérique Duyrat (Bibliothèque nationale de France), the Heberden Coin Room’s collection of nearly 900 coins in the name of Alexander the Great and Philip Arrhidaeus have been added to the online collection by Simon Glenn. The Ashmolean’s coins are also included in the American Numismatic Society’s PELLA portal, which provides links to coins in the name of Alexander and Philip in a number of collections worldwide, thus offering many opportunities for new research on this transformative coinage.
A free temporary display in the Ashmolean Museum Money Gallery, ‘Alexander the Great: Coinage from a common past’ will run until 23rd April 2017 alongside the OPAL project.
