Numista states that the reverse design is not well understood. According to Millies (1871:105-106), some interpret them as stylized sabers from the Aceh flag while some view them as stylized letters, possibly مصروف maṣruf "money of exchange" from root word صرف. The former interpretation is repeated in Singh (1986:538) and the latter in Gumilar (2021:8).
