Mitchiner (2012) considered that the markings repeated six times on coins of this type could be read in two ways. When the two parts are fully conjoined he read this composite as "Sri" in "Sumatran Kannada script" but in specimens where the two parts are separate he read them as "40" in "Javanese script" (Kawi). In any event he considered the second type to be a degenerate later version of the first one.
