Barker (2004, page 165) correctly identifies the actual character on the reverse of this coin as the Chinese cyclical character 巳 (tị), one of the Twelve Earthly Branches. However see Thierry (CMVS).

Thierry (CMVS, page 51, #162 indicates that the character on the reverse (which looks like 巳 (tị), one of the Ten Heavenly Stems, should be interpreted as 己 (kỷ), another of the Ten Heavenly Stems which when combined with 丑 (sửu) (another of the Twelve Earthly Branches) provides a cyclical date based on a 60-year cycle. In this case the date alluded to would be 1709. According to Thierry (CMV, page 53) this issue was to commemorate the accession of the Trinh Lord, Trịnh Cương, known as An Đô Vương (安都王) (1709-1729).
