Note:
Hartill included a small light version of this coin among his category: ‘Small Copper – Distinct Calligraphy, Group 1. (“An Phap” type)’. Hartill has reviewed the various hypotheses for the chronology of An Phap-type coins advanced by Thierry and others. He proposes (GCC, p. 143) that they were manufactured in North Vietnam under the Mac between 1540 and 1590. This provisional dating has been followed here.

Note:
Thierry (CMV) illustrated a small (21.5 mm, 1.73g) copper version of this design with the reverse flat. He quotes Schroder who regarded these as Vietnamese copies of the Chinese Jin Dynasty Da Ding Tong Bao (1161 – 1189). He attributed his coin to Duong Nhat Le (1369-1370). He later regarded such coins as unattributed later unofficial coins.

Note:
Thierry (CMVS) revisited the coin he had previously illustrated in his CMV along with a second slightly larger specimen (brass, 22.7 mm, 1.76g), both with a flat reverse and both of which he regarded as unattributed later unofficial coins, Vietnamese imitations of Da Ding tong bao. It is possible however that these small flat coins were made using larger coins such as HCR 58842 as obverse models or even as mother coins (which would produce smaller copies).
