Note:
Hartill illustrates a specimen from the Pirey collection (Joyaux, 2011, #148) which matches HCR 58863 in having the left foot of 寶 shorter than the right and directed more sideways than downwards. The coins share a closed triangular head of 通. These characters are closely similar in style to those of HCR 58850 (q.v.). Hartill included this coin among his “Small Copper – Resembling Vietnamese Coins” category of unattributed private issues.

Note:
Thierry (CMV, Figure 424) figures a 太和通coin very similar to HCR 58863, even down to having the same 8-pointed star-shaped central hole, formed by cutting out the hole a second time at 45 degrees to the normal cast hole. Thierry considered his coin to be a 大和通寶 though the first character is clearly 太 and not 大. Thierry viewed this (p. 46) as a contemporary forgery of the official Thái Hòa era coin of Lê Nhân Tông (1443-1453), whose coins routinely used the character 大in place of 太. However its small size and different style make this improbable as a contemporary forgery.

Note:
Thierry decided that his coin (CMV, Figure 424) was a private issue inspired by the official 大和通寶 coins, but noted that the initial character of the inscription was 太 and not 大 and that the coin was of a much later date (17th to 18th century). That approximate dating has been adopted here.
