Toda : Page 245, Figures 254-255.
Note:
The obverse epigraphy of HCR 58910 has been incorrectly identified on the ticket. The top character is definitely 洋 (Dương) and not 祥 (Tường). The same error was made by Toda (pp. 101, 245, Figures 254 – 255) who illustrated two examples with this inscription but listed them as Tường Nguyên Thông Bảo. His examples have either a “semi-seal script” 寶 (Fig. 254) or a regular 寶 (Fig. 255). HCR 58910 has the 寶with more angular shoulders than Toda’s Fig 254 and with the arms of mid length. However, Toda’s illustrations were drawn by hand (not rubbings) and cannot be fully relied on for accuracy. No other published European references to this coin have been seen. However images of a single example have been uploaded to the Zeno Oriental Coins Database (Zeno #46721) and Bruce Griffith indicates that that type was illustrated (from a single coin rubbing) in 'Shima sen Bunrui Senpu' by Hirose Teruo, 1987. 137 pp. and earlier by Miura Gosen. Zeno #46721 is said to be of bronze, but Toda stated that his examples were of “White Copper” and HCR 58910 seems to be of brass. All have the reverse flat. Toda included these coins in his category pf “Doubtful Coins. 1600 to date [1882]”. Toda’s provisional dating has been used here for lack of any more definitive assessment.
