Note:
Thierry (CMV, pp. 22-23; CMVS, pp. 58-59) recounts the evidence that wide-rimmed zinc coins with Thiên Minh Thông Bảo and multiple other obverse inscriptions were produced from 1746 until the fall of the Nguyên Lords, brought about by the Tây Sơn (西山朝) rebellion. Additions of zinc Tường Quang Thông Bảo coins similar to HCR 58912 to the Zeno database (109116, 103448, 90469, 162077) have been attributed to this Thiên Minh stylistic group. The obverse epigraphy of HCR 58912 has been incorrectly identified on the ticket. The bottom character is definitely 光 and not 元. Only Zeno #109116 has the four elements on the reverse found in this coin. Others have only the moon and star. Craig Greenbaum (Zeno # 90469) has located what is likely to be this Tường Quang Thông Bảo in a Japanese work (古 銭 價 附) Kosen Nedan tsuke (also titled as Kosen Atai-Zuke) published about 1793~1796, which confirms that the type existed before that date, as does the fact that HCR 58912 is from Kutsuki’s collection.
