This coin is a copy of the Xi Ning Yuan Bao coin of the Northern Song Dynasty Emperor Shen Zong (1068-1085) (Hartill CCC, p. 136, Fig. 16.170). There is no comparable coin in Hartill (GCC) or in Thierry (CMV, CMVS). No similar coin has been found in the Zeno Oriental Coins Database. It is not clear whether this coin is made of bronze, brass or another alloy. Francois Thierry noted the coin during his 2011 visit to the HCR and in his notes referred to it as a Xi Ning Yuan Bao. There is no evidence that the coin is from Vietnam. It is possible this coin came from China (since the sole specimen is from the collection of Christopher Gardner (1842-1914) who was a diplomat in China during the second half of the 19th century.
