Hartill (GCC, p. 146) places this unattributed Vietnamese Hán Nguyên Thông Bảo coin among his category: ‘Small Copper – Distinct Calligraphy, Group 1. (“An Phap type”)’, with two variants having different styles of 通, one with the head compressed (Fig. 2.870) and the other with the head triangular (Fig. 2.871). HCR 58946 belongs to the triangle-headed 通 variety. Hartill proposes (GCC, p. 143) that “An Phap type” coins were manufactured in North Vietnam under the Mạc between 1540 and 1590. This provisional dating has been followed here.
