Hartill (GCC, p. 146, Fig. 2.867) places this unattributed Vietnamese Hàm Binh Nguyên Bảo coin among his category: ‘Small Copper – Distinct Calligraphy, Group 1. (“An Phap type”)’. HCR 58949 belongs to this variety. Hartill proposes (GCC, p. 143) that “An Phap type” coins were manufactured in North Vietnam under the Mạc between 1540 and 1590. This provisional dating has been followed here.

Thierry (CMVS, p. 45, Fig. 94), illustrates (as a Xian Ping yuan bao) an almost identical example of this small private issue to HCR 58949, as a copy of the official issue of the Northern Song Emperor, Zhen Zong (998-1022). Following his usual practice Thierry dated these privately minted coins very approximately, between the 11th and 16th centuries.
