Note:
Hartill (GCC, p. 145, Fig. 2.840) places this unattributed Vietnamese Hàm Niên (or Thiệu) Nguyên Bảo coin among his category: ‘Small Copper – Distinct Calligraphy, Group 1. (“An Phap type”)’. HCR 58950 belongs to this variety, which is characterized by the rounded shoulders of 寶. Hartill proposes (GCC, p. 143) that “An Phap type” coins were manufactured in North Vietnam under the Mạc between 1540 and 1590. This provisional dating has been followed here.

Note:
Thierry (CMV, p. 42, Figure 265) illustrates a Hàm Niên Nguyên Bảo, acknowledging that the reading for the right-hand character 惣 is not established. As discussed on Zeno (# 161792) https://www.zeno.ru/showphoto.php?photo=161792 an alternative reading of the character would be 紹, giving Hàm Thiệu Nguyên Bảo for the legend. Thierry’s example has the 寶 with somewhat less rounded shoulders than HCR 58950, which also has the upper and lower halves of 寶distinctly misaligned. Thierry (CMV, p. 42), dated this and other small private issues to the 13th to 14th centuries.

Note:
Thierry (CMVS, p. 50, cf Fig. 146), illustrates another example of Hàm Niên (or Thiệu) Nguyên Bảo previously shown in his CMV. Following his usual practice in his CMVS, Thierry dated these privately minted coins very approximately, between the 11th and 16th centuries.
