Hartill (GCC, p. 146, Fig. 2.869) places this unattributed Vietnamese Tường Phù Nguyên Bảo coin among his category: ‘Small Copper – Distinct Calligraphy, Group 1. (“An Phap type”)’. HCR 58956 and HCR 89567 belong to this variety. The inscription is copied from a Northern Song Xiang Fu yuan bao coin (Hartill CCC, p. 131) or perhaps more likely a Japanese Sho Fu Gen Ho Nagasaki Trade Coin (Hartill EJC, p. 37). Hartill proposes (GCC, p. 143) that “An Phap type” coins were manufactured in North Vietnam under the Mạc between 1540 and 1590. This provisional dating has been followed here.
