The Ashmolean Museum has a good representative collection of coins in all metals of the eastern Roman and Byzantine empire (AD 498 – 1453), and of its offshoots in Anatolia and the Balkans. It is rich in coins of the 12th to 15th century at Constantinople and Thessalonike, and of the so-called empire at Trebizond after 1204.
