The Ashmolean Museum has very rich and diverse collections of medieval coins of the British Isles and continental Europe. The coins that have been grouped together here date from the turn of the fifth century, in Italy, France, and north Africa, to c. AD 1500, and include also so-called Christian coins of the Near East and Africa. While covering all areas of medieval Europe, the collection has a number of strengths, amongst which are the earliest thrymsas and sceattas of England and the adjacent continent, Anglo-Saxon, Norman, and later medieval English coins, coins of Scotland and Ireland, coins of the Latin East and Armenia, coins of the Balkans, Aksumite coins, and coins of early medieval continental Europe (AD 500 – 1000).
