The Roman Collection of the Ashmolean Museum is one of the most important in the world with approximately 50,000 coins. The collection is very rich for all periods, from the early Roman Republic to the fall of the Roman Empire. Of particular strength is the exceptional coverage for the third and the fourth centuries AD. The collection contains more than 700 gold coins, most of them of astonishing quality, including the coins bequeathed by Sir Arthur Evans. The collection is used worldwide as one of the ‘core collections’ for most research projects.
